Roman Blinds 101: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Posted on 15 August 2025

Roman Blinds are the choice of many interior designers, adding style and value to your home. Contemporary and practical, Roman Blinds are riding a wave of popularity.

If you’re looking for a softer option than roller blinds or shutters, Roman Blinds are a great solution. Pulling together our expertise, here’s our buyer’s guide to Romans:

Why Choose Roman Blinds?

Roman Blinds offer similar benefits to curtains, with the key difference that they ‘stack’ to the top, not the side.

Romans offer:

Insulation - good thermal qualities, reduce winter heat loss, cool in summer

Light control - soft filtering to full blockout

Style and a soft look - adding warmth, elegance or a statement to any room

Privacy - from neighbours or passers-by

What are Roman Blinds?

Roman Blinds are soft fabric internal window coverings that fold into horizontal pleats when closed. They are smart, contemporary and custom-made, tailored to your windows.

Do I need Curtains with Roman Blinds?

No. Roman Blinds are a stand-alone product. That said, for that lux look sheer Roman Blinds pair very well with a heavy curtain or, alternatively, block-out fabric Roman Blinds pair well with sheer curtains.

What do Roman Blinds Cost/How Long to Make?

Our goal at Premier Shades is to balance value with quality to create a competitively priced Roman Blind service. Your fabric choice and window size impact cost so budget $600-$800 per window. Roman Blinds are custom-made in Australia and from measure to installation takes about 4 to 6 weeks.

What fabrics can be used for Roman Blinds?

Roman Blinds can be made with most curtain and roller blind fabrics that are pliable. Fabrics include light filtering or block-out, plain or patterned. Roman Blind fabrics can be lined to improve thermal qualities, be block-out or to protect the fabric (eg linens should be lined).

How do Roman Blinds stack?

Roman Blinds stack to the top so when the blind’s open, it’s important to understand the position the Blind will stack.

For example, if the Blind stacks over the window glass, consider the effects on light into your room.

We usually try to stack the fabric above the window or with minimal intrusion into the window space. Allow 300mm for stacking.

What else should I consider?

Roman Blinds can be motorised and added to your home automation system.

Roman Blinds can be fitted inside the window frame or reveal, or they can be fitted to the wall above the window, like a curtain.

Consider the look you want, the top of the Roman Blind can be lined up with the ceiling, the top of the window frame, or anywhere in-between.
